About Troop 990
A Scout-led troop built around the outdoors.
Troop 990 serves families in Westlake and the surrounding Austin community through monthly outdoor adventures, youth leadership, advancement, service, and a strong patrol-based program.
Who We Are
Practical Scouting, done well.
Troop 990 was founded in September 1990 and has served generations of Scouts in Westlake and the greater Austin area. The troop is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 10836 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church and welcomes families from across the surrounding community.
Our program is designed to help Scouts become more capable, dependable, and confident. That happens through regular meetings, camping, backpacking, advancement, service, leadership positions, summer camp, and age-appropriate high-adventure opportunities.
Adults provide safety, coaching, transportation, and program support. Scouts are expected to participate, make decisions, lead their patrols, teach one another, and learn from both success and failure.
The Program
What Scouts actually do.
Troop 990 is built around a steady rhythm of meetings, outdoor experiences, leadership, advancement, and service.
Weekly meetings
Scouts meet on Monday evenings to plan outings, practice outdoor skills, prepare for advancement, organize patrol responsibilities, and work with youth leaders.
Monthly campouts
The troop camps throughout the year. Most outings emphasize backpacking, cooking, navigation, campsite skills, patrol teamwork, and increasing independence.
Summer camp
Summer camp gives Scouts a concentrated week of outdoor activity, merit badges, advancement, patrol life, and time with the troop away from the normal weekly schedule.
Advancement
Scouts progress at their own pace through skills, service, leadership, merit badges, boards of review, and increasing responsibility. Advancement is supported, but it is not rushed.
Service
Troop 990 participates in community service, including work with Mobile Loaves & Fishes, troop service projects, conservation work, and Eagle Scout service projects.
High adventure
Older and more experienced Scouts may participate in challenging trips such as backpacking, paddling, sailing, or other BSA high-adventure programs when they are prepared for the physical and leadership demands.
How It Works
Scout-led does not mean adult-absent.
Patrol Leaders and the Senior Patrol Leader help run meetings, organize campouts, communicate plans, and guide other Scouts.
Adult leaders provide supervision, training, safety, transportation, and guidance without taking over tasks Scouts can reasonably handle themselves.
Scouts camp, cook, solve problems, and work as small teams. The patrol is the basic unit of the troop and the place where leadership becomes practical.
Scouts get the most from the program when they attend meetings, camp regularly, communicate with their patrol, and accept age-appropriate responsibility.
Skills and Growth
The outdoors is the classroom.
The point is not just to complete requirements. It is to become more useful, confident, and prepared.

Rooted in Westlake.
Visitors are welcome. The best way to understand Troop 990 is to see a meeting and talk with current families.
